The Reality of Being God’s Temple

Jun 16, 2026

I was recently reading 2 Chronicles 2:5-6, where Solomon is preparing to build the temple. He writes:

"This must be a magnificent Temple because our God is greater than all other gods. But who can really build him a worthy home? Not even the highest heavens can contain him! So who am I to consider building a Temple for him, except as a place to burn sacrifices to him?"

As I meditated on those words, I was hit by a beautiful, overwhelming contrast. Solomon was struck by the fact that the Creator of the universe couldn't possibly be contained by a physical building. Yet today, under the New Covenant, our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit.

Think about that for a second. We are fallen people—completely unworthy vessels on our own. Yet, through the blood of Jesus, we have been made worthy. The absolute Sovereign of the universe, whom the "highest heavens cannot contain," has chosen to make His home inside of us.

This truth is a powerful daily nudge. If our bodies are His temple, we are called to present ourselves as a holy, living sacrifice. It means living intentionally every single day. Our words, our actions, and our choices should loudly declare to the world that we carry the presence of the Living God.

We aren't doing this in our own strength, either. Our Heavenly Father has given us a life-giving Spirit as a deposit—a guarantee that every single one of His promises will be fulfilled (Ephesians 1:13-14).

The Holy Spirit is with us in every moment. He guides us toward Christ, draws us back to the Father, empowers us when we are weak, and gently convicts us when we stray. He is the divine seal that identifies us as belonging entirely to God.

Carrying the presence of the Almighty is the ultimate privilege. I am so deeply grateful and blessed to simply be called a child of God.

Questions:

  • Solomon was amazed that a physical temple couldn’t contain God. How does it make you feel to realize that the very same Almighty God has chosen to make His home inside of you?

  • Since our bodies are now the temple of the Holy Spirit, what is one practical way we can present our daily choices as a 'holy sacrifice' to honor Him?
